ساحة جامع الفنا / Place Jemaa el-Fna
Public square at the médina gate. UNESCO ICH 2008 (proclaimed 2001): storytellers, Gnaoua, henna, juice stalls, night food. Free. The place is the square, not a mall.
About ساحة جامع الفنا / Place Jemaa el-Fna
Jemaa el-Fna is the square Marrakesh actually uses. UNESCO lists the cultural space of the square, inscribed in 2008 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, originally proclaimed in 2001. The médina around it is World Heritage 331. By day: juice carts, henna, herbalists, a few performers. From late afternoon the food stalls go up and the circle of storytellers, musicians, and Gnaoua fills in. UNESCO describes it as a meeting point for locals and people from elsewhere, running well into the night. The square is public and free. You pay the stall you sit at. Friday midday is quieter around prayer. Eat here after the palaces close. Pair with the Koutoubia gardens five minutes west, then Souk Semmarine north into the covered market. Do not file this row as a shopping centre.
